BESS4 & BESS5: New Battery Incentives for NSW Businesses

From 1 September 2026, eligible NSW businesses can access new battery incentives through the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme. BESS4 covers systems above 20kWh up to 200kWh, while BESS5 covers larger systems above 200kWh.

BESS4 and BESS5 are new activities under the NSW Peak Demand Reduction Scheme for eligible commercial battery installations, commencing 1 September 2026. The benefit is delivered through Peak Reduction Certificates rather than a fixed cash rebate.

BESS4 covers eligible battery systems above 20kWh and up to 200kWh for small and medium businesses. BESS5 covers systems above 200kWh up to 30,000kWh for eligible commercial and industrial businesses.

The requirements differ between BESS4 and BESS5. Eligibility depends on the applicable activity, system design, equipment and other scheme requirements. Your proposed project should be assessed against the current PDRS rules.

BESS4 and BESS5 commence on 1 September 2026.

There isn't one fixed dollar amount. The incentive is delivered through Peak Reduction Certificates, with the outcome depending on the applicable scheme requirements, system and project circumstances.

BESS4 covers more than 20kWh up to 200kWh of usable capacity. BESS5 covers more than 200kWh up to 30,000kWh, with the BESS5 incentive applying to the first 10,000kWh.
